Product Review
Half the battle of making a software product successful is getting its administrators to understand it, and Microsoft goes a long way toward that goal with MCSE Training Kit: Upgrading to Microsoft Windows 2000. Using a combination of tutorial prose, laboratory exercises, and test-prep questions, this kit will help you upgrade your knowledge from Windows NT 4 to Windows 2000 (so you pass exam 70-222).
Assuming you're familiar with Windows NT 4 (particularly how it implements TCP/IP, DHCP, and users), this book/CD-ROM package competently explains the differences between NT and 2000. Plus it shows how to do an upgrade with the least possible fuss, taking advantage of Windows 2000's new features along the way. Organized as a series of lessons, it reads much like the abstract from a hands-on seminar. Each lesson begins with a concise summary of some aspect of Windows 2000 (Active Directory permissions, network installation, etc.) from a high level. The lessons then grow more focused, touching on the tools pertinent to the topic before detailing the procedures to follow for specific effects. The authors--a team of Microsoft writers--succeed in communicating the conceptual knowledge and practical familiarity that are both vital to passing the MCP exam. --David Wall
Topics covered: The transition from Windows NT to Windows 2000, particularly as it applies to the MCP exam. Installation, Domain Name Service (DNS) setup, Active Directory configuration, configuring desktops and software with the Group Policy tool, file management, and compatibility with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS).
Product Description
This official Microsoft training kit teaches IT professionals how to set up and support Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. The curriculum focuses on understanding the changes from the Windows NT(r) 4.0 operating system and working effectively with new system architecture, user interface, user profiles, and built-in networking capabilities. It also provides comprehensive preparation for the pending MCP exam. Students learn through skills-based tutorials and hands-on lab exercises. An economical alternative to classroom training, this kit enables students to set their own pace and learn by doing.
Customer Reviews & Comments Cover: For Exam 70-222 No Longer Applies The front cover, spine, and back cover of this Training Kit imply that the Training Kit is geared toward the MCP Exam 70-222, however this no longer applies due to the changes in the objectives for this exam. Exam 70-222 is still in development and will be released in its beta version by July 2000. Because the objectives for the exam were not yet finalized when this Training Kit was first published, the Training Kit does not map exactly to this exam, nor to the direction this exam is taking in its development. Since the exam objectives have changed, please disregard the references on the cover.
