Introduction This book is a must-have resource for Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) candidates and for all Exchange professionals seeking concise, to-the-point information about properly installing, configuring, and maintaining an Exchange 5.5 server. Not only does this book cover all aspects and stages of an Exchange messaging system implementation, from e-mail subsystems to information management, but it also, for the MCSE candidate's convenience, covers the official MCSE requirements. Further, this book is a complement to the limited documentation that comes with Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. WHOM THIS BOOK IS FOR This book is aimed primarily towards advanced users who are working on their MCSE certification, to help them prepare for the MCSE Exam 70-081 "Implementing and Supporting Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5." If you're an MCSE candidate, this Microsoft approved book will help you, step-by-step, to learn everything you need to pass the exam. Although this book covers the whole content of the class syllabus, I do suggest that you attend it if you can, as it will help to connect the dots of your new skill set. This book is aimed also to systems and network administrators, as well as to Internet Managers, advanced users, service technicians, and network administrators involved not only with e-mail messaging systems at their corporations but also groupware and Internet enabled applications. WHAT YOU'LL NEED The most important requirement for you to take full advantage of this self-paced study book is to have Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 loaded on your computer and to try the step-by-step instructions in this book. There are, however, some topics that involve more than one computer, for instance, those topics exploring networking and connectivity options. Thus, I recommend that you have, if possible, two computers, one loaded with Microsoft Exchange Server and the other one with the client version, configured as described here, so you can make the most out of every topic discussed in this book. You will need the following: A computer listed on the Microsoft NT Hardware Compatibility List A Pentium-based processor computer for the Exchange server and at least a 486DX2 66Mhz for the client version 64MB of RAM for the server and 16MB of RAM for the client A pagefile of at least the amount of RAM plus 12MB of RAM for each computer. At least 500MB of hard disk space 3Z\x 1.44MB floppy drive SVGA video and monitor Mouse or equivalent point device CD-ROM drive (the faster, the better) Network Interface Card (NIC) A miniport hub to create a test network (or to be part of a nonproduction network) Microsoft Windows NT server installed as Primary Domain Controller (PDC) for the server and Windows 95/98 or NT Workstation for the client HOW THIS BOOK IS ORGANIZED This book is divided into five parts, each part focusing on a specific aspect of the MCSE curriculum and the objectives for every stage you will undertake when implementing and supporting Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. Part 1: Planning Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Implementation This part includes Chapters 1 through 5. The key word for this series of chapters is Planning. Chapter 1 covers planning Microsoft Exchange 5.5 implementation steps. Chapter 2 discusses planning Exchange organization and site topology. Chapter 3 discusses planning for Exchange client needs. Chapter 4 covers the planning of Exchange messaging systems, and Chapter 5 discusses planning for disaster recovery. Part 2: Installing and Configuring Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 This part includes chapters 6 through 12. Chapter 6 covers the installation of Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. Chapter 7 discusses the installation of Exchange core components. Chapter 8 covers the installation of Exchange connectors. Chapter 9 covers the setup of Exchange recipients. Chapter 10 presents an overview on remote procedures calls (RPC) and the way they work with Exchange. Chapter 11 discusses the setup on Exchange's Information Store. Chapter 12 walks you through the installation and setup of Microsoft Exchange client. Part 3: Managing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Resources Chapters 13 and 14 are covered here. Chapter 13 discusses Microsoft Exchange resource management and the Administrator program. Chapter 14 provides an overview of X.500 directory and Exchange. Part 4: Monitoring and Optimizing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 This part includes Chapter 15, which discusses the maintenance, monitoring, and optimization of Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. Part 5: Troubleshooting Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Clients In this part, you'll find Chapter 16, which discusses the basic Exchange troubleshooting techniques and provides an outline of several third-party troubleshooting tools. Appendixes A-D Designed as information resources, these appendixes provide topics ranging from a bug list with workarounds, to a glossary of key terms. CONVENTIONS USED IN THIS BOOK This book uses different features to help highlight key information. New or important terms are typeset in italic. Courier new font is used to denote options and/or buttons as they appear on the actual screens and file menus. Chapter Syllabus The primary focus of this series is to address those topics that are to be tested in each exam. Therefore, each chapter opens with a syllabus that lists the topics to be covered. Each topic directly corresponds to the Level 1 headings in the chapter. So if there are six Level 1 headings in a chapter, there will be six topics listed under the Chapter Syllabus. If a syllabus topic and Level 1 heading are MCSE-specific, they will be accompanied by an MCSE icon (see the following icon description). However, there may be instances when the topics are not exam-specific. In these cases, the chapter syllabus highlights and corresponding Level 1 headings appear without the MCSE icon. Icons Icons represent called-out material that is of significance and that you should be alerted to. Chapter Review Questions Each chapter ends with a series of review questions. These questions are a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions designed to simulate part of an actual exam and to reinforce what you have just learned. Beware! The title of this book is misleading, because the contents and illustrations are describing Exchange 5.0 (not Exchange 5.5) You may choose to verify the following: (1) Recipient Mailbox properties -"Advanced" tab- it shows the Exchange 5.0 version (This is different from the Exchange 5.5 version) (2) The installation for Exchange describe per server option (Note: Exchange 5.5 has only per seat option).
