From the Inside Flap
Introduction
This book is designed primarily to support computing professionals preparing for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) elective exam certification, MCSE plus Internet elective exam certification, or the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) exam certification. Specifically, this book prepares a candidate for Microsoft's Implementing and Supporting Microsoft SNA Server 4.0 exam (exam #70-085).
This book will also benefit any computing professional who manages Microsoft SNA Servers. It is designed to be both a training guide and a reference resource.Who This Book is For
This book is designed to provide concise and comprehensive information for computer professionals who manage SNA Server computers running under the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system. Readers of this book should have a working knowledge of Windows NT 4.0. This book will give the reader the knowledge needed to pass the elective exam requirements of the MCSE program.
Also, if you work in a heterogeneous environment and are considering the implementation of SNA Server, or if you have been given the task of integrating an SNA network with a client/server network, this book is for you. Or, if you work in an environment in which SNA Server has already been implemented and are responsible for any aspect of system or network administration, this book can help you to better understand your role and how to most effectively perform the responsibilities related to SNA Server.
This book uses a hands-on approach to help you learn the basics of SNA Server, to implement it, and to support it. Regardless of your experience level, read on. This book provides straightforward, easy-to-understand information that should enable you to set up SNA Server in your environment. Before long, you should be up and running, experiencing the many benefits offered by integrating your SNA and client/server environments. What You'll Need
Through the use of numerous illustrations and an interactive CD-ROM-based training supplement, we have endeavored to make this book as self-contained as possible. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that there is no substitute for hands-on experience. To gain experience with the concepts explained in this book, you will need at least a medium to high-end Intel Pentium processor or an Alpha AXP processor with 64 Mbytes of RAM, 100 Mbytes of free hard disk space, a network adapter card, a mouse (or other pointing device), and a VGA monitor. Software requirements include Microsoft SNA Server 4.0, Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, Service Pack 3, and Windows NT Option Pack 4.0. Optional software requirements include Windows 95 and Windows 98.How this Book is Organized
This book is divided into four parts each, containing multiple chapters. Each chapter covers issues such as planning, installation and configuration, resource management, monitoring and optimization, and troubleshooting. Each chapter is further divided into subsections that correspond to specific MCSE exam contents and concludes with a list of related study questions. Some additional non-MCSE-specific material is also provided to enhance your knowledge in certain areas. Following is a synopsis of each of the four parts in the book:
Part 1, Overview and Installation. This provides introductory information on SNA and client/server computing to help you to understand the components and requirements of the two networks and to understand how to integrate them. It describes the issues to consider when planning for an SNA Server installation, as well as the steps necessary to perform an SNA Server installation.
Part 2, Configuring SNA Host Access. This provides the information necessary to configure SNA Server for accessing SNA hosts in both hierarchical and peer-oriented environments. It describes the steps necessary to configure SNA Server resources such as link services, connections, LUs, and users. This part also describes how to install and configure SNA Server clients as well as how to install and configure the host print service.
Part 3, Host Data and Application Integration. This provides the information necessary to configure host data integration using SNA Server components such as the Shared Folders service, the AFTP service, the FTP-to-AFTP gateway, the ODBC Driver for DB/2, and the OLE DB Provider for AS/400 and VSAM. It also describes the steps required for host application integration using SNA Server's COM Transaction Integrator for CICS and IMS (COMTI).
Part 4, Management and Troubleshooting. This provides the information required to configure a secure host access environment, concentrating on the steps required for establishing proper SNA Server security. It describes the methods and tools used to maintain proper SNA Server functionality. It also describes the steps required to configure maintenance tools used in managing and troubleshooting SNA Server, including NVAlert and NVRuncmd services, SnaRas, Snacfg, and the SNA Server trace utility.Conventions Used in This Book
This book uses the following features to help highlight key information. Chapter Syllabus
The primary focus of this series is to address those topics that are covered in the exam. Therefore, each chapter opens with a syllabus that lists the topics to be addressed. Each topic directly corresponds to the level 1 headings in the chapter. So if there are six Level 1 headings in a chapter, there will be six topics listed under the chapter syllabus. If a syllabus topic and level 1 heading are MCSE-specific, they will be accompanied by an MCSE icon (see the following icon description). However, there may be instances when the topics are not exam-specific. In these cases, the chapter syllabus highlights and corresponding level 1 headings appear without the MCSE icon.Chapter Review Questions
Each chapter ends with a series of review questions. These questions are a combination of multiple choice, true/false, and open-ended questions, designed to simulate a part of an actual exam and to reinforce what you have just learned.
All of these questions are taken directly from the material covered in the chapter, and the author's answers can be found in the Appendix.
Although this book covers all of the material required by the MCSE exam, the author might have reordered some material in order to make it as clear and concise as possible. While it is impossible to avoid some repetition in topics that are common to all four parts, the author has done his best to present previously described topics in new ways. While this repetition might elicit a feeling of déjà vu at times, it is useful in ensuring that important concepts are remembered.About the CD-ROM/Companion Website
This book is accompanied by a CD-ROM that contains valuable self-paced training material, courtesy of CBT Systems. Please follow the installation instructions on the CD-ROM. This book is also accompanied by a Companion website on which readers can find additional exam preparation aids and updates to the enclosed material. It is located at phptr/phptrinteractive
Customer Reviews & Comments I have been supporting SNA Server for more than a year and I have been looking for a good book that covers the implementation of SNA Server that would also prepare me to take the Microsoft exam. This book does it all. It gives a good overview of the product and its uses while going into just enough depth to satisfy those of us who have to support SNA Server on a daily basis. I was also able to easily pass the Microsoft exam just on the basis of my experience with SNA Server and this book.
