    Customer Reviews & Comments
Let me start by saying that I've been a fan of the Exam Cram series. I've passed around a dozen Microsoft and Novell tests using these guides, sometimes exclusively. I feel like I'm an expert at XP and 2000, so all I wanted was a guide to bring me up to date on the new features of Vista. But this book is so lacking, I'll never be able to pass the test without additional aid. Here are the problems I have with it: First, the author of this book couldn't decide whether he wanted it to be a newbie guide or an exam cram guide, and he switches back and forth from chapter to chapter. IMO, an exam cram guide should assume that the reader has a fair amount of knowledge about the subject and should provide high level information. But this guide often assumes that the reader doesn't know anything at all about computers. For example, the section on "Windows Mail" begins, "E-mail, short for electronic mail, is a fast and convenient way to communicate with others by transmitting and sending text messages...." Are you kidding? Who doesn't know what e-mail is? Should you really be reading an exam cram book if you don't know what e-mail is? My grandmother knows what email is and she's never used a computer. Second, much more attention is given to the features that are unchanged from the last version of windows. The author glosses over the new features. For example, in the TCP/IP section, the author gives detailed instructions on how to obtain an IP address automatically (something that more or less hasn't changed in 3 revisions of Windows), but when he gets to IPv6--a topic that is brand new to Windows and should be detailed thoroughly--he skims over it. There's an exam alert (i.e., you'd better know this for the test) that reads, "If you need to assign a computer directly to the Internet, you need to configure the computer with an IPv6 address that is equivalent to a public IPv4 address, and you need to assign a global unicast IPv6...." What? How do I do that? What do you mean equivalent? I know IPv4 inside and out, and I don't know how to accomplish what he's talking about here. Third, this edition is riddled with mistakes (I know there's a newer version now...I don't know if they've fixed the mistakes, though). I'm about halfway through the book and I've found 8 so far. For example, in the mobility section: "You can use the Windows Mobility Device Center to disable USB connections...." Um, not in my version of Vista. Is this true in other versions? Is this true at all? Or in the section on display settings: "When you change the screen resolution, it affects all users who log on to the computer." Are you sure about that? Cause I tested it and didn't find it to be true. BTW, good luck finding the errata online. I tried and couldn't find it. I would avoid this book like an ex-girlfriend. It is not up to the Exam Cram standards. Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
