Customer Reviews & Comments
I am currently taking 1st semster calculus and our textbook is Calculus 5th Ed. by James Stewart. I have Maple 10 and Matmematica for students and wanted direction for using both of these programs in my calculus studies. I am disappointed with the book by Dr. Hollis. It contains a good review of the commands etc needed to get expressions into Mathematica and how to graph them. However, it isn't much help beyond just checking derivatives etc. Most of what the book addresses can be done with a graphing calculator. One major ommission is any discussion of the use of data sets and tables. Every chapter of my textbook contains problems that require entering a data set into a calculator and doing some sort of curve fit excercise with the data. There is no mention of curve fitting or it's use and application as related to the Stewart book. This is enough for me to say "Don't buy this book". You can find the same information presented in a more readible manner in Schaum's Outline "Mathematica" for less money. I do have Calclabs for Maple and at least this book addressed the use of data sets and curve fitting as used in Stewart.
