Product Description
Get up to speed on Apple's latest major release, Mac OS X Panther, and its iLife applications through hands-on exercises and demo movies. Apple has made a great operating system even better with the release of Mac OS X Panther. With Panther, the formerly complicated Finder is set up to work like the easy-to-use iTunes interface, and Expose allows users to quickly switch among dozens of windows and files. Other upgrades include a new Font Book for managing fonts, ways to manage multiple email threads, and the ability to protect your files from people you don't want accessing them (File Vault). However, it's difficult to use these great tools or know how to burn CDs, work with photos, use no-charge videoconferencing, or instant messaging effectively if you don't understand how to work with the operating system itself. Enter Mac OS X Panther Hands-On Training. Veteran author and trainer Garrick Chow first tackles the operating system--understanding the interface, working with files and folders, installing applications, and printing. Then he tackles the digital goodies: burning MP3s, editing iMovie videos, posting images online. Chow devotes the first sections to grounding readers in skills they'll need to use the OS, and once they're fluent, he provides detailed coverage of the bundled iApps: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iTools, and iChat. The entire book is filled with hands-on, fully illustrated tutorials and demo movies that get users up to speed quickly.
About The Author
Garrick Chow has been using Apple computers since sixth grade, when he was introduced to the Apple IIe. He is a freelance computer instructor who has traveled the country providing on-site training for private corporations as well as state and federal agencies. In addition to being a Mac devotee, Garrick is also an Adobe Certified Expert of Acrobat, and he teaches a wide selection of programs ranging from Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks to Adobe Photoshop and QuarkXPress. Customer Reviews & Comments Unfortunately, for me, my iBook 700 was too slow to run Dreamweaver MX 2004. I don't care what the folks at Apple or Macromedia say. You need a G4 to get the most out of that program. At first I was pretty bummed, because I'd gotten years, and I mean years, out of my PowerBook 1400 before upgrading to that iBook that I'd had for only 9 months. But the lure of the lastest, and I must say greatest, version of Dreamweaver was too much. I bought one of those spiffy G4 iBooks and now I'm a happy guy. But low and behold, the machine came with Panther pre-installed. And I'd just gotten a handle on Jaguar. So, I did what I did when I wanted to learn Jaguar, I bought a book. Notice I said book, not books. When confronted with Jaguar, I went to the bookstore and bought several books, only to learn that the lynda.com people had the best of the bunch. So this time I saved a gang of money and bought the only book you'll ever need if you want to learn Panther. Two fat thumbs up from me.
