From the Inside Flap
A little more than 14 years ago a computer system for home or office consisted of a small machine with 32KB of memory and a floppy disk drive. If you were really into it, you had 64KB and two disk drives. There was virtually no application software available off the shelf and you wrote what you needed, usually in BASIC.
The world of computers has come a long, long way. Now we have desktop workstations with many megabytes of memory, hard-disk drives in the 300MB range, and sophisticated windowing and user interface systems. Also, these workstations can be linked to each other through networking systems.
One of the most innovative developments in software technology is the X Window System, more commonly referred to as X. It was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by personnel from MIT and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). It has been released in several versions, the most recent being Release 5 of Version 11 (X11R5). It is widely recognized as a standard for network-based windowing systems and is supported by a consortium of well-known, highly respected companies such as AT&T, DEC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun Microsystems.
Motif, a product of the Open Software Foundation (OSF), is a graphical user interface built on X. OSF is a non-profit organization founded in 1988 by a group of companies (including DEC, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM) whose objective was, and is, to develop a standard user-interface environment. Motif uses a set of components of Motif and X allows you to create graphical interface. The combination of Motif and X allows you to create graphical interface applications capable of running on practically any vendor's workstation.
