Product Review
"A charming collection of myths and legends from various parts of the world, MOON TALES is probably a read-aloud book rather than one younger children can read for themselves. I think that most of the stories need a bit of explanation from a parent or a teacher--mostly because they are from different cultures and other time periods and present a very different picture of the world. My grandson, 8, listened to the book, had all kinds of questions and finally said he thought we should keep MOON TALES until he was in the fourth grade (hes currently in the second).
I enjoyed the book and think it would make a great introduction to the evolution of belief systems, myths of other lands, and the influence the moon had on various cultures. Ms. Watkins has done an admirable job of presentation. Recommended!" -- Under the Covers Book Reviews
"MOON TALES is one of those rare books that can be treasured and reread again and again. Marjorie Watkins has collected tales from various countries and retold them in a clear, charming manner. The illustrations are vivid and hold a child's interest. I don't think I could sum it up any better than my five-year-old, who said, "I really like that book. Let's read it again." -- Lori Soard, reviewer for The Word Museum
Product Description
When you look at the full moon, what do you see there? A face? A rabbit? A frog? A tree? Here are nine tales from Pacific Rim countries. Each story tells how some person or animal happens to be on the moon.
You'll read of a frog that fell in love with the moon; of Akaruya, a baby found in a bamboo grove, who when she grew up returned to the moon; of Akanaa, the boy who carries water in a jar for the man in the moon; and of Susano-o, the villain in the moon. You'll read of a Dai girl, Yutalao, whose mother became the tree in the moon, and of Lao I the Excellent Archer and his wife Chang Ao, whom the gods made rulers of the Sun and Moon.
Have your own moon-watching party and celebrate Chang Ao's birthday with the recipe for Moon Cakes.
