Product Review
If you need to convert your large existing Adobe FrameMaker documents into HTML-based documents for the Web or an intranet, check out FrameMaker to HTML. The authors start out by discussing the process of using converter tools to turn complicated documents, including those with tables and graphics, indexes, cross references, and tables of contents, into linked HTML pages. In these chapters the authors generally don't discuss any one converter tool, but instead assume that once you run the conversion process, which is fairly automatic, you'll still have editing and tweaking to do. This is where they really help, giving a great deal of advice coding HTML and on planning the design and navigational elements of your site. Then, in the last part of the book, the authors discuss how to use the conversion tools included with FrameMaker, such as HoTaMaLe, as well as several third-party tools, such as WebMaker, Webworks Publisher, and HTML Transit. There's also information on using alternative publishing tools such as Acrobat and SGML. What's especially nice is that the authors assume that you're a desktop publishing professional, but not a Web author, and that you want to get up to speed in the world of Web publishing quickly. The included CD-ROM has a demo version of WebMaker.
Book Description
I wish this book had been available when I started converting documents to HTML! - Liz Hujsak, Conversion Project Manager, Apple Computer
Customer Reviews & Comments I was very excited to see this book listed. For a day and a half I was struggling trying to create a Frame 5.5 template that would satisfy print and html viewing using Frame 5.5's conversion feature. The book stated that it had an entire section devoted to this process. Alas, the book covered a pre-release version of the utility and provided no more information than the sparse Adobe documentation and online help. The title didn't give the reader a true understanding of the document. I thought they would go into some detail regarding the process. Instead they provided a 1,000 ft view point of four utilities. I hope I can return the book. The book spent a lot of space on HTML reference and web design. Hopefully, someday specialty writers will realize that a lot of comprehensive, easy-to-use HTML reference documents already exist and spend there space focused on their speciallty.
