Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have been a casual eBayer since the late 90's and had attained PowerSeller Status briefly when I sold guitars online. Some of my family members do eBay as a business and I am relatively familiar with how eBay is done. Also, I am a huge fan of NOLO books and consult them when I need to understand legal issues (such as Non-compete agreements). NOLO is a very reputable publisher and you might even be looking at this book because NOLO published it. This book is a little bit different though from standard NOLO fare. When I saw the title of this book: "The eBay Business Start-Up Kit" and the fact that it contained a CD-ROM (most NOLO books contain one with relevant forms related to the title and task at hand), I thought that I was getting a book that would not only guide me in the essence of forming an eBay business entity (LLC, etc) but also might provide resources for finding stuff to sell. Afterall, if you are REALLY interested in starting an eBay business at the non-casual level, I would think that your experience with eBay is tried and true by this point. You won't need to know how to register on eBay, or what Paypal is ... you have experience with this already. It seems like this book wants to be everything for everyone -- but I don't think it executes as well as it should. Some of the information in this book is SO BASIC that it seems out of place for a book that in it's next breath talks about forming a business entity or being audited by the IRS. I also need to mention that the included CD is the EXACT stuff in the book. In fact, it appears that the book was printed from the CD because you will encounter TONS of underlined text in the book (which are hyperlinks on the CD). I found this extremely annoying. Underlining in print is not a common convention, but you will encounter it in this book and it might throw you off a little bit. The book also relies on fee structures that are already outmoded or are going to be outmoded very soon. eBay is changing things up. It seems to me like this would have been a good stand-a-lone CD and a membership website where buyers could access the latest and up to date information about eBay (since it is going through some changes at the moment). Instead,we are left with a bulky book, with wide margins that tries to be more than it is. It also repeats what is on the CD (which is a big waste of paper in my mind). I think this book could have been much better executed than it is. But it would have been thinner ... and perhaps thinner books don't sell as well. I found the book disappointing for a NOLO title. If you are an eBay beginner -- I would recommend searching for another book that will show you how to find selling resources, etc., as well as show you how to register along with the mechanics of selling on eBay. If you are an established eBayer really buckling down and trying to create a solid business entity, buy this book for the CD-ROM that has an awesome bunch of business forms on it. 3 Stars for the pure repeat information in the book and the lack of identity.
