I bought this book while working on non linear optimization, i.e. when problem cannot be solved with classical linear programming. Mr. Winker has achieved a terrific job. He starts by introducing the reader to optimization heuristics with very simple problems and shows why we need new tools, especially in econometrics. He shows also that heuristics can be easily applied to a quite large set of problems. While the book focuses only on threshold accepting, Mr. Winker devotes a large section of the book to the parametrization of this algorithm, which is crucial to obtaining good results. Why buying this book opens the pandora box? Because this topic is really fascinating and you'll spend a lot of time in it!!
