    From the Inside Flap
    Preface

This book is designed to teach beginning students the fundamental skills required to operate, troubleshoot, and upgrade minicomputer systems. This book is also designed to provide insight and information on various components of a PC. This valuable information can be an aid to decision making and should lead to more effective choices of computer equipment. No prior knowledge of computer or electronics theory is required. Instead, this book is designed to develop the essential skills needed to operate and upgrade a personal PC. Emphasis is placed on the practical hands-on experience students require to become a professional computer technician.

The second edition of this book is designed to prepare the students from the introductory concepts to the analysis and services of a complete computer system. It can also be used for high school electronics programs and industry-based training programs, such as A+ certification, or as a reference for practicing technicians. The text is organized into seven chapters:

Chapter 1: Computer FundamentalsIt presents to the student the history, fundamental concepts, and basic operating system architectures of computers. Chapter 2: Configuring and Upgrading PC HardwareIt teaches the techniques and skills needed to upgrade and configure a personal computer hardware. Chapter 3: Windows 95/98/2000 Command LinesIt shows how to use Windows 95/98/2000 command lines needed to operate, troubleshoot, and upgrade a PC. Chapter 4: Configuring and Operating Windows 95/98/2000It is designed to give students an understanding of how Windows 95 operates. It also provides practical handson examples to perform everyday tasks in a Windows 95/98/2000 environment. Chapter 5: Computer Service and SupportIt describes the skills and tools necessary to troubleshoot, diagnose, and service a computer system and printers. Chapter 6: Computer NetworksIt exposes the student to the theory of computer netwcarks, including their services and protocols. Chapter 7: The InternetIt summarizes the basic concepts of the Internet. In addition, students will learn how to create web pages using HTML.

This book could be used as a first semester manual to introduce computer fundamentals. It also provides all the necessary prerequisite material needed for a computer networks course. I have provided an adequate amount of theory to explain the topics and allow for further exploration if a student so desires. The reading level has been kept as simple as possible. The text follows a consistent format and pedagogy. On the other hand, I would be happy to hear from any readers about how to improve this text.

This edition redesigned the old 6 chapters into 5 new ones and added 2 additional chapters. The new material added to create the second edition is found in chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5. Chapters 6 and 7 were added to include computer networks and the Internet. The text is designed to give students a practical and step-by-step approach to maintaining and servicing a computer system.
