Preface
The text portion of this manual is designed to show students how to use a personal computer with Windows® 2000, and various application programs including Microsoft Office 2000. The CD-ROM contains manuals for DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and application programs based on Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. The manuals on the CD-ROM van be viewed and printed with the Adobe Acrobat Reader. The manuals are tutorial based and designed to be used together with the computer. Examples are given with screen captures so that students can follow examples screen by screen. The Windows® section is designed for use both in a public computer laboratory and by students with their own computer. The examples show how to use Windows® as well as set up Windows® to your own preference. Although modifying the Windows® setup is not desirable and may not be permitted in a public computer laboratory, the information is given so that students with their own computers can modify the setup to their own tastes. The sections on modifying the Windows setup can be skipped if modifying the setup is not allowed.
The screen captures for the Windows 2000 portions of this manual were generated with the Beta 3 version of Windows 2000 and the evaluation version of Windows 2000. Both of these versions are pre-production versions and some of the screen captures may be slightly different than what you may see with the production version of Windows 2000. The author apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. Barring any major changes between the beta version and the production version, these differences should be minor. The screen captures of the Microsoft Office 2000 programs were generated with the production version of these programs.
The hardware section is provided as an introduction to hardware and is not meant to be comprehensive. Instead, its goal is to give enough information so that a student can talk competently to hardware retailers and manufacturers when purchasing or upgrading a computer. Questions and Problems
Most sections have questions and problems at the end. The questions are taken directly out of the text and are designed so that students can answer them just by reading the text. Thus, the questions are designed to guarantee that students read the text. The problems ask a little more from the students. Problems are designed such that students must read the text and then obtain more information not contained in the text to solve them. Students should be able to solve the problems by using the on-line help facilities that accompany all of the software discussed in this manual. The best way to solve many of the problems is to use the help facilities and search for topics related to the problem. Comments and Suggestions

You want to study computer hardware. You need to know how Windows 2000 Professional works and most importantly you need to learn how Office applications work with both Windows 2000 and the hardware of the system. You need to buy 8 or 9 books, or do you? Marc Herniter has taken the trouble to put together a 900 plus page book that covers each of the areas and will give you a better understanding how each integrates with the other. Herniter's book are not written to any exam certification specifically, however there is enough information to supplement your studies. From hardware topics like memory, disk storage and video, to Windows 2000 topics like the file system, explorer, desktop, management and system utilities to Word, Excel and PowerPoint in Office 2000, Herniter gives you a very good book to work with. Also Herniter includes networking and the internet through Windows 2000, which is certainly a great bonus. The omitting of Applications like Access, Front Page, Outlook and Project does mean you will need other books, hopefully in the 3rd edition these topics will be covered. There is an abundance of screen shoots to help make the author's points in every topic. Also the additional questions at the end of each section are a great study bonus. The Cd-rom that comes with the book includes several tutorials from DOS to Windows 2000 to Office 2000. For those that teach this is certainly a book to take serious look at.
