Product Review
As one of the most powerful server-side languages for building dynamic Web applications, ColdFusion is a key technology for high-end Web development. Programming ColdFusion is a comprehensive tutorial to ColdFusion that puts all of the material necessary to master this scripting language between two covers.
This book is suitable for experienced Web developers with no background in ColdFusion to learn the development tool from scratch, but it's especially well suited to those with some prior exposure to ColdFusion who want to master the product. The early chapters move quickly through the basics of ColdFusion, leading up to more in-depth topics.
One of the key elements of ColdFusion is its ability to connect Web pages to databases for dynamic, data-driven solutions. Programming ColdFusion focuses on making the most of the database features, including drill-down queries, query caching, stored procedures, and transaction management. The text also deals with issues like state, security, directory services, and much more.
The material is presented in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner with an excellent balance of overview discussion, sample code, and screen shots. ColdFusion is a tag-based language and there are plenty of fine examples of how to make the most of it. An appendix also provides a reference to the entire dialect. This tutorial is a great tool for mastering ColdFusion. --Stephen W. Plain

Customer Reviews & Comments
This review is from: Programming ColdFusion (Paperback)
This is probably the 5th or 6th O'reilly computer book I've purchased, and one thing has become clear: If you want to learn languages, there is only one place to go. Nobody beats O'reilly. For every O'reilly book I've bought, I've probably bought 2 or 3 non-O'reilly books. Most times I've completely regretted my decision. The Cold Fusion takes a relatively simplistic approach to teaching the reader. Cold Fusion seems like such a daunting language (perhaps because of the name? the salary you can achieve if you master it? who knows?). The book makes it quite clear that Cold Fusion is really no tougher than advanced HTML. And its true, I know HTML backward and forward, and was able to pick up CF tags easily. Not only that, but the language's logic is much the same as C/C++. The book takes you through everything you need to get an excellent start on learning CF. Including showing you how to setup the ODBC on your W2K machine so you can have your own server at home. I went from knowing that Cold Fusion was a theoretical energy solution in physics to setting up my own database for my cds (including adding, deleting and editing the lists) in 3 days.. not bad. I definitely recommend this book!
