Product Description
While Latin America’s fixed lines stagnate at 17% teledensity, mobile subscribers have overtaken their fixed-line counterparts in every country except Cuba. Paraguay leads the trend, with ten mobile phones for every fixed line in service. Broadband grew at the annual rate of around 54% in 2006, however broadband penetration at end-2006 was only 2.5%. Some countries are leapfrogging into new applications such as VoIP, WiMAX, and triple play, while governments struggle to bridge the digital divide and find a solution to the region’s inadequate rural telephony. Telecom infrastructure varies from nonexistent to rudimentary and from adequate to well advanced in some major cities. This report gives an overview of activities in Latin America relating to broadband, convergence and the Internet. Major statistics include key country indicators, subscriber numbers, annual change and penetration percentages, growth indications and historical data. Some of the data is not current, but was the latest available at the time of publication. This report only provides statistical tables relating to the above topics. For descriptions, commentary and forecasts for these topics see the complete reports: 2007 Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Latin America - Central America 2007 Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Latin America - Mexico and the Caribbean 2007 Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Latin America - The Andean Countries 2007 Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband in Latin America - The Mercosur Countries
