Octave is a stable, high quality, powerful desktop environment for mathematical analysis. Octave is designed to be a clone of the commercial product Matlab. I can't speak to the level of compatibility (I used Mathematica extensively when I was doing my graduate degree) but Octave appears to robust and reliable thus far. With that as a prelude, it's difficult to do a thorough review on a 600 page reference manual. Like many of you, I have programmed in dozens of languages in my life and at this point I pick up new one by using a reference manual on my lap. So far, this manual has gotten me through without a hiccup. It has a good index -- as best as it can be for something this thick. The writing style is excellent with descriptions being clear, concise, and accurate. In a few cases I had wished for sample usage but got through without them just fine. I've used a lot of reference books in my life and I'd rate this among the best of them.
