This book is an excellent training resource and walks the user through all of the basic, most of the intermediate, and some of the advanced features of Crystal Reports 2008. The material is presented in large-format pages with many visuals that materially aid in understanding. The book is written in an open and easy style that successfully balances the need to present technical information to readers who are not wholly devoted to IT development. The strength of the book lies in the scores of example exercises. Each exercise step is described and many steps are illustrated. Most of the exercises focus on a single topic, though many build on earlier exercises to fully explore a topic or suite of topics. The exercises are clearly presented, well thought out, and close enough to "real world" reporting problems that they are useful. The exercises on conditional formatting are very useful, especially as this topic is largely ignored in other manuals of this type. The sections on charts and parameters are both lengthy and useful. The book also features several exercises on report alerts, a topic that is completely ignored in virtually every other product on the market. Finally, the book has an exhaustive and useful index that insures it will be a useful resource beyond the initial foray through the exercises.
