Whether you're new to CorelDRAW 8 or are already an accomplished user, this book can help you learn how to produce eye- catching artwork--commercial and otherwise--in this popular illustration package. The writer first gives you a brief overview of CorelDRAW, explaining vector and bitmap graphics, then delves right in to producing effects. Each chapter concentrates on different effects, so you can jump from one chapter to a much later one without a problem. Other CorelDRAW books, by contrast, are divided into chapters that build upon one another.
The effects include fire, liquid, ice, stone, scales, tentacles, rips, landscapes, collages, graffiti, tattoos, pierces, wire, knives, and chains. The middle chapters get even funkier and dwell on such topics as comic book heroes, satellites and starships, and graphics with a 1950s theme. Finally, you learn how to create shiny objects, gears, moving objects, buttons, patterns, and 3-D effects. The book is filled with illustrations and step-by-step instructions on how to create each effect. In the middle, there are almost 100 full-color pages showing examples of the many images. The companion CD-ROM includes project files and sample fonts and filters.

That was very high praise from me...back then when I had just finished the book and thought 5 stars was fawning. Now I know I was wrong. I finally put another book in the space CorelDRAW f/x was supposed to occupy on my shelf. It sits by my computer while I work, and frequently comes with me when I need lunchtime or waitingroom reading. I use this book constantly. I can't let my first review stand any longer. If you have any doubts about this book forget them IT IS WELL WORTH MANY TIMES THE PRICE! I intend to add the new version to my computer desk and book bag when I upgrade to CorelDRAW 9. And probably 10 and 11 and...
