Review
"This text is an especially helpful as an accompaniment to the 3GPP specifications themselves, which offer no explanations as to why one thing or another is included, no hint as to why one protocol technique was chosen over another, or why certain contributions appear only to disappear in later releases. Khan's text offers a welcome set of explanations for pretty much all the mysteries in the specifications; the book gave me a sense of having sat through the LTE formulation process itself. Farooq Khan gives us a rigorous exploration of the contributing technologies and practices with all the whys and wherefores disclosed. The book is, in my view, a critical accompaniment to the LTE specifications for readers who prefer to understand what they are reading and would like to be able to interpret and actually use the LTE specifications." Customer Reviews & Comments Working in 4G / WiMAX for last two years as part of team for launching the 1st Commercial Mobile 4 G network in Baltimore/Washington DC and being responsible for the 1st trail test bed in Arlington, I am always in look for 4 G materials and books.
This is one of the best books so far I have come across regarding the 4th Generating Mobile networks. The 400 plus pages are a power house of sheer knowledge and explanations regarding the 4th generation and LTE. The books covers almost every subject matter starting from the basic network architecture to the advance topics like Channel coding, MIMO, Scheduling, H-ARQ, P-Control, signaling details, so on and so forth. One of the best chapters I like is the Chapter 16 i.e. Page 409 to 425, where Interferences, cell edge, frequency reuse and loading is discussed. I believe that these are the must know topic for anyone who is going to design the Future LTE and 4th generation networks. The point I especially liked is the diagrams. The book has adequate diagrams which are clear and precise that describes the text in perfect supplement. There are also a lot of mathematical expressions which not only proves the detail explanations but also show the full command of Author of the subject. As said, the topics are well explained and we do not need any more details but never the less there is a detail list of references at the end of each chapter.
For me it is kind of hard to find a short coming of book as it is so well written and the author is a SME. We could have an extra cherry on the cake by have some more treatment of the IP / network regarding the LTE and 4th generation by beefing up the chapter regarding the network architecture and protocol. For marketing and management staff, I talked to they would like to have more of an extended summary in start of chapters without technical details. Last but not least, in due time it will be interesting to see how the real networks data compares out to the chapter 19 regarding the LTE performance and verification. I am sure both will be in perfect accordance.
